Brief presentation
Darckr pages are presented in four sections:
- at the top, the "menu", allowing to navigate across the different views
- just below, the presentation options, that allow any user to customize the way pages are presented
- the main part of the window is devoted to presenting pictures or sets
- at the bottom are listed your Flickr authentication status, and copyright details
It is harmless to try all menu options. Some of them will require you to authenticate with Flickr. Eventually, if you don't have a Flickr account, it will propose you to create one, which you may or not accept after seeing what it amounts to.
Read and Write permissions
To use all the features in Darckr, you'll need to have a flickr account, and to let Darckr authenticate, which is harmless since it does not require delete permissions.
- Read permissions are required to access your own photos ("mine"), or view your "contacts" photos.
- Write permissions are required to post comments.
Darckr does not ask for delete permissions.
Saving HOURS OF YOUR FLICKR LIFE with comments
All picture display modes allow you to post comments on the photos. To do this, just select "comments" on the option line, just below the menu. Below are a number of relevant hints:
- If you're using Firefox, or any browser with comparable features, you may shift/control click any picture in order to display the corresponding Flickr photo page, to read all the details and functions that Darckr will not present.
- You can post a batch of comments and faves at once. Before you get started, or when you get back after a while, just try posting a comment on one single picture, because in some cases, when flickr authentications expire because of delay, Darckr cannot keep track of your data. If ever darckr says "posting comments on ZERO photos", do not go backwards, but try refreshing the page. This should post the comments again.
- When you post a batch of comments at once, you may exceed Flickr's api comment rate (currently very low - I believe to prevent spam). Darckr will remember everything, and au refresh the page every couple minutes, so you can forget it, leave the "posting comments" page open, and after a while, you'll see that all comments are indeed posted.
- You'll also notice that in post comments mode, already commented photos do not show up again. That way, you can track your contacts, or explore, or a friend's NEW photos very easily.
- When posting comments in contacts mode, the pictures are presented in reverse order. This is so because the moce ancient are the most urgent to comment upon when you arrive. You are not bound to this ordering anyway.
Sharing!
Darckr is also good for sharing beautiful and end user customizable views of your Flickr stream.
Copy and share the links in the "permalinks" mode.
Helper scripts
Darckr comes along with a Grease Monkey script that allows to access the darckr page for any flickr user directly from within flickr. The script adds a menu option "Darckr" to your pages. A second script duplicates the "add comment" form inside picture pages, so that one instance is just below the picture, and you don't have to scroll down the entire list to adda comment. Scripts can be obtained and installed from the download page, and require both Grease Monkey itself and Firefox.
Cookies
Darckr uses cookies to remember your preferences over time (number of images, of columns, default username), so you'll have to allow them in your browser.
